The Caribbean National Forest is the sole tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System. The forests relatively small 28, 000 acre size belies its importance. It differs significantly from all the other U.S. National Forests because of its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity.

This benthic mapping activity was conducted to inventory the reef ecosystem and associated bottom types for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (hereafter PRVI). Prior to this project, a comprehensive inventory of the shallow water ecosystems in these areas did not exist.
